RACI
(Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed)
A nice simple recipe for defining roles and responsibilities.
How to implement
Responsible
The individuals or teams who actually do the work to complete the task or deliverable. There can be multiple people in this role.
Accountable
The one person who is ultimately answerable for the correct and thorough completion of the deliverable or task. There should only be one Accountable person assigned.
Consulted
Individuals or teams who need to be consulted before a task is performed or completed. This involves two-way communication and seeking their input.
Informed
Individuals or teams who need to be kept up-to-date on the progress or completion of the task or deliverable. This involves one-way communication to keep them in the loop.
Example
Let’s define roles for the task of ‘Designing a new user interface’ using the RACI framework:
[Responsible]: The UI/UX Design Team will be responsible for creating the design mockups.
[Accountable]: The Head of Product will be ultimately accountable for approving the final UI design.
[Consulted]: Representatives from the Engineering team will be consulted to ensure the design is technically feasible, and the Marketing team will be consulted to ensure it aligns with brand guidelines.
[Informed]: The Project Manager and the Customer Success team will be informed once the UI design is finalized.
