Pendleton Model

Makes feedback a positive conversation by first focusing on what you did well, then looking at how you can improve, so you feel encouraged and know exactly where to focus next.

How to implement

Learner States What They Did Well
The person receiving feedback starts by reflecting on their performance and identifying aspects they believe they did well.

Others State What the Learner Did Well
The person(s) giving feedback then share their observations on what the learner did well.

Learner States What They Could Have Done Differently/Learned
The learner then reflects on areas where they could have improved or what they learned from the experience.

Others State What the Learner Could Have Done Differently/Learned
The person(s) giving feedback then offer suggestions for improvement or share their perspective on what the learner could have done differently or what learning opportunities might exist.

Action Plan (Optional)
Depending on the context, the discussion might conclude with the development of an action plan for future improvement.

Example

Lisa: “Okay Sam, great job on getting that user authentication feature implemented! What parts of the process do you feel went well for you? [Learner States What They Did Well]

Sam: “I think I managed the database integration pretty smoothly, and I’m happy with how the error handling works.”

Lisa: “Yeah, I agree. The database integration was well done, and your error handling is robust. Also, your code is really clean and easy to follow. [Others State What the Learner Did Well] Now, thinking back, is there anything you feel you could have approached differently or learned from this experience? [Learner States What They Could Have Done Differently/Learned]

Sam: “I think I could have asked for your input on the API design earlier. I spent a bit of time going down one path that we ended up needing to adjust.”

Lisa: “That’s a good observation. For future features, don’t hesitate to bring those design questions up early – we can often save time that way. Also, maybe spending a little more time on upfront planning for the API interactions could be beneficial. [Others State What the Learner Could Have Done Differently/Learned] So, for your next task, maybe we can schedule a quick design review before you start coding? [Action Plan (Optional)]
