GROW
(Goal, Reality, Options, Way-Forward)
Helps you nail down your goals, see where you're at, brainstorm ways to get there, and make a solid plan.
How to implement
Goal
Define the specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goal you want to achieve.
Reality
Explore your current situation, including your resources, skills, knowledge, and any obstacles you are facing.
Options
Brainstorm a range of possible strategies, actions, or approaches that could help you reach your goal.
Way-Forward
Decide on the specific actions you will take, create a clear plan with timelines, and commit to the steps.
Example
”Okay, let’s talk about your career goals, Alex. So, what specifically would you like to achieve in the next year? [Goal]“
Alex: “I’d really like to take on more leadership responsibilities within the team."
"Alright, and what’s your current situation in terms of leadership opportunities right now? What kind of projects or roles have you had so far? [Reality]“
Alex explains his current responsibilities and experiences.
”Okay, that gives me a good picture. Now, what are some different options you’ve considered or could explore to gain more leadership experience? [Options] Maybe shadowing senior leaders, volunteering for project lead roles, or taking some leadership training?”
Alex suggests a few ideas.
”Great. So, based on these options, what specific steps are you going to take in the next month to start moving towards that goal? Let’s create a plan with some concrete actions and deadlines. [Way-Forward]”
