BOOST
(Balanced, Observed, Objective, Specific, Timely)
A nice simple recipe for making clear points and backing them up with evidence.
How to implement
Balanced:
Offer both positive and constructive feedback.
Observed:
Focus on what you actually saw or heard.
Objective:
Avoid personal opinions, judgments, or subjective interpretations.
Specific:
Provide clear and detailed examples of the behavior you are referencing.
Timely:
Deliver feedback as soon as reasonably possible after the event occurred.
Example
”I really appreciated how you took the lead on organizing the team-building activity [Balanced - Positive Observation]. During the presentation this morning [Observed - Situation], I noticed that you didn’t make eye contact with the audience very often [Observed - Specific Behavior]. This could make some attendees feel less engaged with the information [Objective - Describing Impact]. Perhaps in future presentations, consciously focusing on making eye contact could help build a stronger connection [Specific - Suggestion for improvement; Timely - Assuming this feedback is given shortly after the presentation].”
